Homeschooling is Triggering

Okay, just get ready for it. You will be relaxing at a friend’s house. Enjoying the good food, unique beverages, and great company when the firing squad will appear. Someone will inevitably show up and begin asking questions as if you needed their permission to educate YOUR children. As if, you asked them for money to pay your water bill. As if your child was a menace to society because he was not enrolled in the local school. Yes, get ready for it.

Here I was relaxing on Mother’s Day. Our 3rd child just graduated from college with his bachelor’s degree, our 4th child was still in college and our 2 oldest graduated with degrees in computer science on full scholarships. Soooo, now I was at the receiving end of a guy who barely parented his one child as he, “played Devil’s advocate.”

Well, as the Lord arranged things, the grandmother (his close friend) at the table was aware of the traps laid by many schools who are clueless about how to educate little boys and railroad them into detention and special education classes instead of trying to develop their innate genius. Grandmother spoke up repeatedly against the man’s missiles. I was grateful as he was completely caught off guard from his friend’s defense of homeschooling.

Even as a retired homeschool mom, I still get rattled from the weariness of the years of questions and self-doubt. I do not like to use profanity, but this type of scrutiny does make it tempting.

Let’s pray:

Heavenly Father, help us to be secure in our decision to homeschool no matter what anyone says. Give us wisdom to know how to answer questions that come from those who do not understand. Bless us to rest in You, Father Lord. Heal our hearts and minds. Renew us daily so we will have the stamina to endure this journey, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

If you have a knee jerk reaction to homeschooling,  maybe it is because you only imagine one type of homeschool. What if McDonald’s was the only restaurant, you had ever visited? Nothing against the golden arches but it would be unfair to judge all restaurants by the standards of one. The same principle applies to homeschooling.
